Organization Backgrounder
Defending Farm Animals began activities in
1997 and was formally incorporated in 1999. The three founders have been active in animal rights and welfare for many years both through local
and national organizations as well as independently. The need for a new
organization became more apparent as they observed little attention to the 99%
of exploited animals; farm animals. The need was further underscored by their
frustration with fund raising ethics, struggles over giving and taking credit
for work accomplished, and the general lack of reasonableness in complex
animal-people relationships.
The funding for the first few years of
operations was largely derived from the three founders. Each of the founders has
maintained professional careers outside of the animal rights movement to prevent
the need for an income from the organization or from the movement. Defending
Farm Animals remains true grass-roots with no funds going to office space or
salaries.
Defending Farm Animals is the only animal
protection group in the upper- Midwest that has and is incorporating public
education and outreach with investigations and exposes. DFA is a vanguard group
that will continue to successfully agitate for social reform and change for
animal issues.
